For exceptionally meritorious service while assigned as a Deputy Sheriff’s with the Operations Division, Field Services Unit of the Bedford County Sheriff’s Office on April 6, 2013.  While serving in this capacity Deputies Rowland and Gibson were on patrol and responded to a call for assistance from a female who advised that she had been assaulted by her boyfriend.  The female also reported that her boyfriend had a gun concealed in his pocket.  The Deputies responded to the scene and  made contact with the suspect at a basement doorway.  When approached, the suspect slammed the door shut.  Deputies quickly forced entry through the door where were confronted by the suspect pointing a large caliber handgun directly at them.  The Deputies quickly sought cover and ordered the suspect to drop the weapon, which he did, but then fled on foot.  As the suspect was fleeing he ran past the deputies and reached in his pocket and began to remove another handgun.  Deputy Rowland announce this action and Deputy Gibson was able to deploy his Taser, which brought  the suspect under control.  A handgun was recovered from the suspects pocket upon arrest.
