TRAFFIC ALERT
BEDFORD COUNTY – A SECTION OF ROUTE 717 TO CLOSE FOR ROAD REPAIR

On Wednesday May 29, 2013, thru Wednesday, June 12, 2013 a section of Route 717 (Murray Hollow Road) will be closed to traffic and will remain closed until roadway and embankment repairs are complete.

The location of the work is approximately 0.5 miles south of the intersection of Route 692 (Cool Spring Road) and 4.0 miles north of the intersection of Route 689 (Irving Road).

Motorist will need to use alternate routes during this time.

At 9:50 p.m. Thursday evening, Bedford County 911 dispatchers received a call from 105 Angus Terrace, Bedford, VA. The caller advised that he operates a bed and breakfast at this address. He called to report a female guest had reported to him that her husband had assaulted her and he was armed.

Upon arrival, deputies located Carolyn Kessinger, who stated her husband Kevin Kessinger had assaulted her. She also advised that he was armed with several firearms. Bedford County Fire and Rescue units responded to the scene and transported the victim to Bedford County Memorial Hospital. Kevin Kessinger fled the scene on foot.

Bedford County deputies with the assistance of a tracking K-9, VA State Police helicopter and officers from the Bedford Police Department searched the area for Kessinger.
Deputies discovered Kevin Kessinger hiding in a ditch near Three Otters Road at 11:50 pm. He was arrested and transported to the Bedford Adult Detention Center.

Kevin Ray Kessinger, age 49, 19302 Sedgebrook Lane, Lynchburg, Va. was charged with felony strangulation, brandishing a firearm, and domestic assault. He is being held without bond.

The Bedford County Sheriff’s Office, along with Bedford City PD and Virginia State Police, conducted a D.U.I. Checkpoint on 5/11/2013 from 2100-0100 on Stewartsville Road at Morgans Mill Road/Nemmo Road. We had ten deputies along with 2 Bedford City officers and 2 State troopers checking approximately 500 vehicles.

A total of 26 tickets were issued along with 7 arrests made. Three vehicles were towed and one firearm was seized for safekeeping. Three K9 searches were conducted with one alert which resulted in 2 drug arrests.

On Thursday evening May 9, 2013 at 9:30 p.m., a Bedford County deputy sheriff observed a motorcycle traveling east on 460 west of Montvale, clocked at 79 miles per hour. As the deputy attempted to stop the motorcycle, the driver looked back, saw the deputy and increased his speed. During the pursuit the motorcycle reached speeds as high as 120 mph. The pursuit continued approximately 15 miles. As the motorcycle approached the intersection of 460 and Wheatland Road, the motorcycle suddenly slowed and attempted to turn left in the median and go back west. The deputy’s car contacted the rear of the motorcycle and the driver fell off the motorcycle. The driver got up and ran, but was apprehended. The VA State Police responded to investigate the accident.
The driver of the motorcycle was identified as Tyler Songer, age 28, 1385 Mcdearman Road, Montvale, VA. Songer was arrested and transported to the Bedford Adult Detention Center and charged with felony elude a police officer, reckless driving, driving without a license, operate an uninsured vehicle and fail to inspect vehicle.  He was held on a $2,000.00 bond.

ROUTES CLOSED DUE TO FLOODING

Bedford County Sheriff’s investigators have charged Darrell Bruce Orange, age 52, with arson of a residence at 1071 Murray Hollow Road in Thaxton. He lived in the residence with his mother. He is being held in the Bedford Adult Detention Center on no bond.

At 2:05 p.m. Tuesday, Bedford County 911 dispatchers received a call reporting the fire. The caller reported that the back bedroom was on fire. Bedford County Fire and Rescue units responded to the location.

APRIL 29, 2013 (UPDATE)

On Monday April 29, 2013 Bedford County Sheriff’s investigators obtained arrest warrants for DeAngelo Montez Brown, age 28, 6520 Dorchester Rd. Apt. 2800H, North Charleston, South Carolina. Brown has been identified as the second black male in the Altima last Wednesday. Brown faces the same charges as Waring, minus the driving charge.
