Last week The United States Department of Justice awarded Bedford County a grant of $20,670.
The sheriff’s office hopes to use that money to buy 26 body-warn cameras with a two-year warranty.
The department already owns 18 cameras, which deputies rotate between their shifts.
“You’ve gotta have them on,” Bedford County Sheriff Mike Brown said of the cameras. “It protects the deputy, but it also protects the citizen.”
The grant requires a match of $10,335 from the locality receiving the award.
Bedford County supervisors will discuss whether to allocate the matching funds at their meeting Monday night.
