Bedford Co., VA – There will not be a resource officer in every Bedford County elementary school next school year.
The board of supervisors approved a budget last night, leaving out an $800,000 request by the sheriff to pay for 15 additional deputy positions.
Sheriff Mike Brown calls it a foreseeable liability.
“I think there was a lot of lip service paid to the potential problems, the potential dangers, that we as law enforcement executives are seeing by city councils and by board of supervisors members,” said Brown. “Then, all of the sudden once it sort of dies down, that concern goes away and that’s irresponsible.”
The Sheriff’s Office is applying for state grants that would pay for a few additional SRO positions. They expect it to be a very competitive process, as localities all over Virginia are also applying for that same money in the wake of Sandy Hook.
